The National Cancer Institute (NCI) is the Federal Government’s principal agency for cancer research and training. Interested in developing a new look, tone and feel for their website, NCI invited Saforian to develop and present a conceptual model of how the site could better meet the needs of their varied users, both now and in the future.

NCI provided Saforian with audience research materials and asked for ideas in how to increase the level of engagement between users and the NCI site. In addition, NCI was interested in seeing how they might expand to alternate content delivery platforms, like the utilization of mobile technologies.

Saforian's team of information designers and strategists presented concepts focused on providing personalization capabilities as well as a specialized content portal for the key audience segments. We showed examples of how search functionality would play a huge part in providing fast, easy access to important content while appearing seamless.

Our deliverable included content organization concepts, engagement diagrams, potential navigation models, improved content delivery capabilities as well as a visual exploration of an improved home page design.

Saforian's goal during this exploration was to take a step back and come up with new ways to engage and involve the sites core audiences in a way that established Cancer.gov as the premier platform for providing both the educational content as well as the social opinion based content. Thus creating an experience that allowed audiences the ability to utilize the power of social interaction to help make informed decisions about diagnoses, treatment options, support initiatives, etc. All along providing connection possibilities with other patients, family members, doctors, nurses, practitioners, or support providers.
